The dual-mode SAT-600 is one of the most sophisticated and advanced mobile satellite
phones
ever produced. It combines the functionality of GSM 900 and the advantages
of a satellite constellation to communicate from the most remote regions in the world.
Globalstar mobile phones function as both cellular and satellite phones providing service in areas where many cellular and landlines may never go. This allows you to stay in touch from virtually anywhere with reliable voice and data services

The SAT-600 is also the first dual-mode terminal having an Electro-luminescent high resolution display which allows for greater readability and low energy consumption.
Globalstar Satellite provides solutions for individuals who live and work in areas outside of cellular network coverage, or in places with poor landline services. Satellite calls can be routed directly from the satellite phone to the Globalstar satellites orbiting the Earth. Global satellite service enables users to communicate in many remote or under served regions where wireless or landline networks are limited, non-existent or developing.

The newer-model Telit Sat 600 phone provides greatly extended battery life -- up to 24 hours (in Globalstar Satellite mode) or more without recharging -- through a new ``slotted paging'' function. Previously, Telit Globalstar phones in stand-by mode continuously scanned for incoming call signals, rapidly draining battery power. Slotted paging, which is also used on current generation cellular phones, instructs the phone to scan for incoming signals only for a very brief instant every few seconds, resulting in far less battery usage per hour while in stand-by mode.
Telit is Italy's largest producer of cellular and satellite phones. Based in Trieste and Rome, Telit products are giving a voice to the Mobile Generation, developing products through its network of laboratories and cooperative work with universities in Italy and elsewhere in Europe.
Telit Globalstar phones allow users to make calls either over the Globalstar satellite telephone network or through regular GSM-based cellular networks, GSM being the cellular standard commonly used throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Australia and other parts of the world. Telit Globalstar phones have been available with voice-call capability in most of these markets for nearly two years, but until now they provided data capability only over GSM terrestrial networks. With the new software introduced today, Telit phones now can provide GSM-like data connectivity over the Globalstar satellite network as well.
Using your dual mode Satellite/GSM Telit Sat 600 Telephone, calls may be made and received using both the GSM 900 MHz cellular networks (on condition that an agreement exists between your network operator and the network on which you are about to operate) and using the Globalstar satellite network.
Despite Sat 600's advanced tehnology, it is extremely simple to use. It offers the functions typical of a GSM telephone but in addition, using a very simple menu, it allows you to make use of the enormous potential offered by Globalstar networks's satellite coverage.
Globalstar is easy to use and provides safety and security if you are travelling independently or when shared amongst a group of friends wanting to keep in touch with home. We have access to numerous handsets to cater for government, industry and commercial needs in addition to individual recreational users.
Basic charge includes a flat fee for the first week's hire with a reducing daily rate per week after that (see rate card). To that you only need to add your call charges, a statement itemising calls will be forwarded to you usually within 7-14 days post-hire to reconcile your account.
An easy-to-use data kit also gives the Telit SAT-600 complete asynchronous data capability, allowing users to connect PCs or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to the Internet and to private networks at speeds up to 9.6 kbps.
Data services from Globalstar allow you to go beyond the limits of cellular data services. You can attach your satellite phone to a laptop, computer, or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to connect to the Internet and email systems. Users do not have to be limited to using the keys on a phone keypad, and can use all the features and displays of a laptop, computer or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).
Several satellites pick up a call, and this "path diversity" assures that the call does not get dropped even if a phone moves out of sight of one of the satellites. As soon as a second satellite picks up the signal and is able to contact the same terrestrial "gateway", it begins to simultaneously transmit. If buildings or terrain block your phone signal, this "soft-handoff" prevents call interruption. The second satellite now maintains transmission of the original signal to the terrestrial "gateway". Additional advantages of using Low Earth Orbiting satellites within the Globalstar system include no perceptible voice delay and lighter / smaller all-in-one handsets. The satellites utilize a "bent-pipe" architecture. On any given call, several satellites transmit a caller's signal via CDMA technology to a satellite dish at the appropriate Gateway. Gateways process calls, then distribute them to existing fixed and cellular local networks. Terrestrial gateways are an important part of Globalstar's strategy to keep key technology and equipment easily accessible and to integrate our services as closely as possible with existing local telephony networks. This makes the Globalstar system and its services simple to manage, expand and improve.
