In the last quarter of 2005, a company PC-Mobile started a serial production of connection cables for eXplorists 100, 200, and 300 to PC. We had a chance to test it and have found that is very convenient and usefull peace of additional hardware for all of you who wants to exeted functionality of your small explorist handheld GPS receiver. On this page you can find more details about the product and how you can buy the cable.
This is a new style/system for connecting GPS/PDA. It is not interchangeable with the old style produced by the same company they we have been selling for a few years before 2006. The main difference with the new style is that it is possible to power the GPS and PDA with just one power source with the new style while you need a power splitter with the old style cables. If you are buying GPS/PDA connecting cables for the first time the coice is clear - buy this new style cable.
Inside the battery compartment are four pads that can be used for serial communication. You will have to use a MAX232 to shift the voltage levels. Since this occupies the battery space you'll need to provide power as well. This can be tapped from a USB port. Once the cable is built you can download waypoints using OziExplorer.
All above require additional software/data and are available for free or for a fee from many places on the internet, where you can find useful information how to connect eXplorist to PC? Note HighSpeedSat does not provide any software or software support for that project. One is for sure - the availability of such interface will help Magellan to sell more of eXplorist 300, 200 and 100 models.
Magellan eXplorist 100, 200 and 300 are low cost, good performance, compact GPS receivers, favoured mostly by Geocachers. Unfortunatelly, they are let down by the lack of a computer interface thus it is not possible to transfer data from/to a PC or PDA as it is.
GS1DC data cable is here to support this small community who may require such and have developed such external interface port for eXplorist 100/200/300.
Such interface will allow users to:
Every time you have finished using the data cable, switch off the GPS via its power button BEFORE disconnecting the power cable. Otherwise data you have worked on may be lost before saving it to the GPS. By switching off the GPS, it will save necessary data before exit.
If you found, that it is more convenient, than pieces of curve tin wireframe, and if you want to buy expolorist connection cable directly from manufacturer please visit PC-Mobile website.
